5 November 1989. I showed up in San Sebastian on a grey and rainy morning much like today not knowing I’d be here for the next 30 years. I quickly fell in love with the local culture, all its peculiarities and ancient traditions and of course its food and eventually a Basque. I cooked professionally and spent untold hours in some of the world’s most famous kitchens, talked to fish mongers and farmers, sorted grapes, made cheese, had a market stand (first brownies in Ordizia I’ll bet!) and realized that I had particular insight into this land and it’s people so I turned my life into my career. I led my first professional trip in 1993 and started Tenedor Tours in the mid nineties to share my unique position with curious and adventurous travelers. Since then I’ve been witness to huge changes in food, wine and politics in the Basque Country and have been proud to play a part in some of it. Today’s lovely lunch in Etxebarri was a wonderful way to spend my 30th anniversary in the Basque Country. #TTstories #TTwine #TenedorTours
