Eugenie de Montijo the Spanish aristocrat later Empress of France by way of her marriage to Napoleon III chose it as the site of her stunning summer home. Villa Eugenie now the five star Hotel du Palais presides over the Grand Plage a symbol of the cityÕs splendid past. Eugenie, a cool blonde, was the Grace Kelly of her day and is credited with creating the fame of the French fashion industry as designers lined up to dress her. In the 19th century steam trains brought the pre-Jet Set to this once rustic whaling village. Aristocrats followed the royal family and wealthy industrialists built villas on the hill behind the EmpressÕ "cottage". Actresses, Fashion designers, artists and writers followed.

Today access is quicker by plane or TGV, which zips down from Paris in about 4 hours. While its Belle ƒpoque splendor is still evident the city has kept up with the times and is now a haven for surfers, filmmakers, designers and fashionable Parisians on weekend breaks. Part of the lure comes from top boutiques, the casino, film festivals and surf championships as well as breathtaking coastline. Several golf courses and tennis facilities are easily accessible but the main attraction is the beach or beaches because the city has five, each with a very distinct personality. Let us arrange a tour of the villas or a surf class for you followed by dinner in the old fishermanÕs port or a casino night!

Nearby San Sebastian, another royal resort was once a playground for the Spanish elite. Hemingway recovered from his excesses here and discreet Europeans have long celebrated its charms. All come to enjoy the fabulous beaches and many Michelin starred restaurants which are bringing new fame to this lovely city on a protected bay. San Sebastian is best known for its International Film Festival, which attracts stars and players as well as JulyÕs Jazz Fest. But throughout the year the city offers great food, nonstop nightlife, music and museums in a glorious setting.
